Surf Team Practices Cancelled This Week Due To XXL Swell

All high school and junior high surf team practices have been cancelled this week for both Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon due to an XXL swell set to arrive and hold for both of those days.

Please exercise all due caution even at relatively protected spots like the Jetty if you decide to enter the ocean on your own recognizance. This swell is forecast to be triple-overhead at exposed spots, or potentially holding up to 50-foot faces and extremely dangerous, expert-only conditions.

The weather is forecast to be sunny, offshore and clear, however, which would make viewing of Maverick's in all her glory ideal for any who may wish to spectate at a safe distance.

Please be careful this week,
The Coaches

High School "A-team" Practice at Jetty Tuesday 6:30 a.m.

The High School "A-team" practice will be held at the Jetty at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Winds will switch around to the NW coinciding with a raw 20-foot Gulf swell that will hit Monday into Tuesday, leaving the protected Jetty the only viable option.

High School "A-team" Practice at Kelly Tuesday 6:30 a.m.

A-team High School surfers: practice will be held at Kelly Ave on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. Oct-19. There should be some short-period windswell to work with and we plan to run some heats. Please double-check with Marty first thing to confirm conditions (773-0936).

Thanks,
Your coaches

High School "A-team" Practice at Jetty Tuesday 6:30 a.m.

The High School A-team practice will be held at the Jetty on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. The winds are supposed to turn a little offshore and the raw windswell may simmer down by afternoon, but northern buoys are still in the 10-12 foot range. Some 193-degree south swell should be filling in as well with low tide around 3-foot in the morning, so the Jetty could provide some hot-doggin little peaks for a change.

The two upcoming dates are November 6 at the Lane in Santa Cruz and February 5 at Pleasure Point. Duck Diving Instructional Video

Duck Diving is the key ingredient to boosting confidence of beginning and intermediate surfers in larger surf. Those of you who have migrated to smaller boards need to learn the basics of the duck dive. We tried to film some dives at the last practice, but the brown water made it a mission impossible. So here is a corny, but effective, pool demonstration pulled from Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8WEf3q1TQU
