Call to the Wall Contest & Benefit

By all accounts, the Call To The Wall Surf Contest and Surf Club Benefit event held at the Old Princeton Landing on Saturday was a success. Coach Lindsey's innovative contest format encouraged the older, experienced surfers to support and develop the younger, less experienced surfers.

Some of the format features included:
  1. Forming mixed teams of Club, Middle School Team and High School Team surfers
  2. One wave per surfer continuous relay
  3. 2 x 30 minutes heats
  4. Points scored no matter how the wave is ridden (e.g.., standing, kneeling, on belly)
  5. Wipe outs were also judged and scored
Some impressive rides and wipeouts were witnessed.
The final results:
  • 1st  - Orange Team
  • 2nd - White Team
  • 3rd -  Blue Team
  • 4th -  Red Team
  • 5th - Yellow Team

Contest results were announced at the Benefit Event later that evening after the conclusion of the live stream of the High School Football State Championship between HMB Cougars and Steel Canyon Cougars. The Cougar Trophy was awarded to the Orange Team Captain, Nate Feix.  The grand raffle prize (Wavestorm soft top surfboard with custom artwork by local artist Pete Collom) went to a deserving winner.

Special thanks goes out to all of our local surf shops (Cowboy, The HMB Board Shop, Mavericks & Xcel Wetsuits) for the generous donation of items for the raffle.  Be sure to support your local surf shops as they support you.

SCSSL Middle School Competition at Manresa State Beach

The third Middle School contest of the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League took place this past Saturday, November 23rd. The contest had to be moved from the Hook to Manresa State Beach of Santa Cruz due to very small surf in the 1 to 2 foot range. Cunha surfed against Mission Hills, the top rated school in the league, and was defeated in the team round by a score of 77 to 49. Considering the terrible conditions, not Half Moon Bay surfers prefer type of surf, the Cunha competitors surfed very well.

All was not lost as three Cunha team riders advanced all the way to the finals:

Emma Stone surfed her way to the finals in two division and took 2nd place in Girl's longboard and Girl's shortboard. Ella Catalano-Dockins took 5th place in Girl's shortboard while Cunha's very own Clay Johnson took 4th place in Boy's Longboard.

Fun was had by all the competitors as we look forward to our next contest on January 19th, 2014 at the Hook in Santa Cruz.
