HMB Middle School Results for the Hook on Feb 23 2013

We had some very contestable waves with 2-3' waves, sunny and light offshore conditions.

In the Team on Team event ... we were defeated by Mission Hills 77 - 49. Though we had a good day and every one got in the water. We had three alternates seeded into the event and saw Marius Kulda with his first short board debut and Kacie Sorfleet stepping into take a spot in the young womens short board event.

In the Individuals we saw two of our surfers making it thru to the Finals:

Never winter...

Congratulations HMB Middle School Surf Team on a fun & beautiful (if somewaht cold) day at Manresa!

Results:

Kalea Johnson took 1st in Girls Longboard
Nicky Sorfleet took 6th in Girls Longboard (First time in the finals!)

Kalea Johnson took 4st in Girls Shortboard

HMB fell to New Brighton 71 to 55

Conditions were sublimely groomed in the morning, with light offshores and waist to shoulder high peeling mostly left-breaking waves at high tide and rights as the tide drained towards low. Towards the end of the day onshore winds picked up.

***Most of the Midde School Surfers received their SC SSL T-Shirts. Rocky will have them available for the rest of the team at the next couple of practices.

Fantastic job HMB!

HMB Surf "Team/Comp" Practice Sunday in Santa Cruz @ 41st Ave./Hook

HMB Surf TEAM Practice will be in Santa Cruz on Sunday 9:15 a.m. (Nov 4th) - Team/Comp Practice will be a "Free Surf Practice" split between the Hook to Pleasure Point depending on the surfers ability and conditions.

We will first meet up at Starbuck's in HMB at 7:45 am on Sunday morning to depart for SC for a tune-up at our next competition venue at the Hook. Then we will make our way to The Hook parking lot at the end of 41st St by 9:15 a.m. The purpose is to gain familiarity with the break. If anyone needs a ride, please show up promptly. After Practice we will head over to Steamer Lane to watch the WCT - O'Neill Cold Water Classic - to witness some high performance contest techniques in person.

Surf "Club members" are encouraged to get in the water at the Jetty in HMB at 9 a.m. Though there will be fewer coaches, we should have the trailer available and some support. If you want to see some truly outstanding surfing after practice, you should try to make it down to Santa Cruz to see the top 32 surfers on the ASP World tour compete at the Lane. This is also a good opportunity for the groms to hound the Pros for autographs... just sayin.

State Park Pass Price increase coming...

Heads up people... just heard in the news that the State Parks pass costs will be raising the price of annual park passes by as much as $70 on May 1.

The cost of an annual day use pass that is valid for all California parks will jump from $125 to $195. The Golden Poppy pass, which provides entrance to 98 parks..., will go from $90 to $125.

So if you're close to renewing your Califonia State/Poppy Park Pass do it sooner rather than later and save some $$$... as it may make sense to renew before the prices climb.

Costa Rican Biodiversity Tour - Summer 2013

I (Amber Johnson) am leading a biodiversity tour to Costa Rica during the summer of 2013.  This tour is set up for college students at SFSU, but we still have some space available that we can fill with friends and family too!  Take a look at the link below to see the itinerary.  The tour is coast to coast with amazing stops along the way.  This is not a surf trip, but the tour ends on the Guanacaste Coast and travelers can choose to extend their stay and surf if they like.  The tour is currently discounted until April 5th!  For those under the age of 30 it is $137/month (after $95 enrollement fee and transfer fees) or$1906.  For those over the age of 30 it is $154 per month or $2146 as a lump sum if you book by April 5th.  If anyone has any questions send me an email or give me a call (650-452-4593) and I would be happy to answer any questions!

If any families are considering sending just their surfer, please call me ASAP as there are some age restictions that I would like to talk to you about.  If you feel that your child is ready for this type of an adventure, I'd be happy to have them!

Please note that this tour actually takes place during the last week of school!  If there is enough interest - I could schedule a trip during summer proper (maybe 2014) if there are families that would like that option.
