Club Surfers,

No promises... but there is an off chance that we can squeeze in a club surf tomorrow afternoon. What's good is the wind should be light off-shore with a draining tide. The only issue is we have another large swell filling in tonight and peaking tomorrow. Since the angle of the swell is fairly steep out of the north we are hoping that there will be enough shadowing to give it some protection on our beaches at the north end of town.

We'll send out an update mid-afternoon to let everyone know if it is a go. Probably less than a 50% chance.. but maybe...

Marty and Rocky

Surfrider ProAm Update

Surfrider ProAm Update:

This contest has been moved from Sunday to Saturday December 12 at Linda Mar with a 7:20 a.m. start.

The contest director says there are 8 slots available, though beach entries may be considered if not filled by then.

Sign up ASAP: $68/surfer for shortboard, all-comers and no gender split. Prize money 1st: $500, 2nd: $250, 3rd: $100

Conditions may still be pretty unruly after massive swell Friday, so only advanced HMB team surfers (and alumni) should consider participating. There should be south winds, however, which may help.

High School Surf Team Practice Schedule

America/Los Angeles

High School Surf Team Practice Schedule:

Due to a failure of the high school athletic alert system, we're back to old school updates this week. Please spread the word.

1) Wednesday 3:30 pm Jetty, no practice Friday and see details below for Sunday.

Surf will be 10-20' all week, rebuilding to another hefty swell on Friday, which leaves a tight window for Wednesday between pulses. Please exercise caution this week.

Surfrider Pro-Am contest:

This comp is scheduled for Sunday at Linda Mar and organizers will make the call by Wednesday if the contest will be moved to Saturday or rescheduled. It is open to team and club surfers, and would make a great tune-up since our next SCSSL comp is not until late-January. Registration is below.

Club Surfers,

Again, we have a narrow window to get surf before it gets too big. We're going to shoot for tomorrow instead of Sunday.

Check for updates in the morning. If the swell fills in, we'll be at Dunes. If it's still small we'll be at Pomponio or San Gregorio.

I don't have my truck this weekend so I will not be able to bring the trailer.

HMB High Surf Team Results at Waddell

HMB High Surf Team Results at Waddell:

The High School surf contest was moved to Waddell Beach on Sunday. Conditions were small, clean and contestable all day; high tide in the morning falling to a low after lunch, which made for a “wave catching” contest in the early team rounds and sectiony, close-out, conditions for the individual rounds. Incredible beach day, with calm conditions and warm weather from dawn ‘til dusk.

Check out Oliver's photos on Flicker:

Team Round:

HMB went against our main rival Santa Cruz High and came up just short at 48 to 57 in a hotly contested team round. Freshman Nate Feix (1) and Ryan Bair (2) distinguished themselves in the team mens shortboard heats, while Team Captain Hunter Murison (3) just squeaked through in shortboard as well. Senior Malcolm Feix (3) moved forward in longboard. Kaira Wallace advanced in womens shortboard (2) and longboard (2).

Individual Round:

Several HMB surfers took advantage of the Alternate Round to advance. Mitchell King (3) in mens longboard, Kacie Sorfleet (1) in womens shortboard and Nikki Sorfleet (2) in womens longboard moved forward. All three advanced as far as semi-finals, where Malcolm Feix also bowed out in mens longboard and Hunter Murison, Ryan Bair and Nate Feix also exited after some very feisty and savvy contest surfing in small surf.

Kaira Wallace found a little mystery seam that broke left and allowed for some cross-stepping and top turns, using it to her advantage over her long-standing friendly Santa Cruz rivals in the womens heats.

Finals Results:

Kaira Wallace (1) womens longboard; (2) womens shortboard

Next comp will be January 30-31 at Pleasure Point/The Hook. Note, there will be no practices over the Thanksgiving break - have a great one!

HMB High Surf Team Manresa Results

HMB High Surf Team Manresa Results:

There are not too many sports in which you are simultaneously part of the food chain and your "playing field" is in a constant state of flux. Surfing is one of those few and the challenges at the season opener at Manresa built in proportion to the sinking tide and fast-rising swell Sunday. Team heats at the crack of dawn were held in fast, glassy, head high conditions. By the end of the day finalists faced double-overhead walls that detonated in waist deep water and tested their courage as much as their surfing skills.

Team Round:

HMB had a number of surfers advance from the team round, including Nate Feix (1) and Hunter Murison (2) in men's shortboard, Kaira Wallace (1) and Nikki Sorfleet (3) in women's shortboard, Coel Miller (3) in men's longboard and Kaira Wallace (2) in women's longboard. Despite those solid efforts HMB (47) fell to a reinvigorated Soquel (57).

Individual Round:

There were a number of outstanding efforts that demonstrated the deep reservoir of talent and potential of the 2015-16 team. The alternate round saw Mitchell King (2) through on men's shortboard with intelligent reads of the reforms. Malcolm Feix (1) advanced in men's longboard and Nikki Sorfleet (2) in women's longboard.

Nate continued to march through men's shortboard to the semi-finals with some very mature and clean rail work for this freshman, before bowing out. Also a freshman, cool headed Nikki extended her impressive run to both shortboard and longboard semis. Hunter had an outstanding semi in shortboard, sticking huge floaters and top turns into exploding close-outs just as he planned, earning 8's for single critical moves.

Women's longboard: Kaira Wallace (1)
Men's longboard: Malcolm Feix (4), Coel Miller (5)
Women's shortboard: Kaira Wallace (4)
Men's shortboard: Hunter Murison (5)

Congratulations to all the team after a very challenging start to the season. Looking forward to the next contest on November 21-22 at Pleasure Point/The Hook, where we should get a little more protection from the elements.

Your coaches,

Mike and Kerri

Coach Marty will be on Vacation from 10.22 to 11.2 No club practices for the next two weekends.

10/22/2015 8:00 am
11/02/2015 8:00 am
America/Los Angeles

Club Surfers,

I will be in Moab Utah for the next 10 days or so. With that being said, we will not be holding club practices in my absence. Both High School and Middle School teams will be competing this coming weekend. Check the website for updates on the location. I strongly encourage all of you club surfers to go watch and cheer for our surfers. You will learn a lot by watching! Conditions should be good for you to surf too but make sure to stay out of the contest zone:)

Hopefully we will get some much needed rain soon so that we can get some local sand bars going. When conditions are right, I would like to run some club heats. This will give you club surfers a chance to learn some competition skills.

Have fun and get some surf! I'll see you all when I return!!
