HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule and Lifeguard Training:
1) No practice Friday due to storms and rain
2) Sunday 9 a.m. Montara (will confirm if heats and location shift)
Guard Jeff Wadkins met with a few of us on Sunday to offer to swim-run-swim training every Wednesday at 4 pm meeting at Kelly Ave. starting tomorrow for those interested. This is great training for the surf team and guards, which will be testing for summer positions on March 15 in HMB at 9 a.m. (must be 16 and have a licence). Youth aides for Junior Guards will be testing in April. I have fliers for those interested in seasonal guarding and/or you can contact Jeff at jeff.wadkins(at)gmail.com or 831-419-0736 for more info.

HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule:
1) Friday "Free Surf"
2) Sunday - Kelly - 9 a.m. Heats
Due to the Presidents week break we'll take a pass on Friday (onshore late), though winds and weather should turn more favorable as the swell subsides this weekend. Sunday we may run heats and go over important points on heat positioning for the next comp at the Lane coming right up on Mar-9, if there are enough surfers back in town.
See ya there,
Mike, Kerri, Chris
P.S. If you haven't already seen them, there are some good shots of our team from the Feb-15 Pleasure Point Comp on SantaCruzWaves.com:
HMB High Surf Team Results at Pleasure Point:
The Cougars (55) on Saturday came up a few points shy this week against their arch-rivals Santa Cruz High (71), which fielded a very talented squad on their home break. We were also missing two seniors, which made it a tall hill to climb from the outset. The contest was shifted from The Hook to the Point at the last minute due to the small surf on tap, which proved to be a great call to get through the high tide lulls with inconsistent but contestable conditions for most of the day. That is never our strong suit, but made the advance of several individuals to the finals and two surfers making it through to two finals each all the more exemplary.
In men's shortboard Hunter Murison (2) and Thomas Lundgard (2) advanced from the team round, while in women's shortboard Kaira Wallace (1) made it through. Both Kelby Kramer (1) and Coel Miller (2) advanced from bodyboard, which was our strongest category. In men's longboard Hunter Murison (3) made his heat with some fancy cross-stepping and in women's longboard Kaira Wallace (2) also advanced.
Luke Evelslage bowed out in the quarters for men's shortboard, along with Grayson Capers and Hunter Murison as the flukey and soft conditions got the better of our power surfers, while Kelby Kramer and Malcolm Feix advanced as far as the semis in bodyboard. Four surfers made it all the way through to the finals with some savvy wave selection, tack-sharp surfing and last-minute heroics. Thomas Lundgard was the last man standing for HMB in shortboard, but was held off some the best set waves by the competition. Coel Miller was the standout men's Cougar for the day, finaling in two out of three events, really stepping up for the team and having a great time to boot. Kaira Wallace made two finals with last-minute back-up waves and Hunter Murison, much to his own surprise, made a longboard final with combinations of sharp cut-backs and nimble cross-stepping.
Bodyboard: Coel Miller - 3rd
Women's Longboard: Kaira Wallace - 2nd
Men's Longboard: Hunter Murison - 5th, Coel Miller 6th
Women's Shortboard: Kaira Wallace - 4th
Men's Shortboard: Thomas Lundgard - 6th
Great job all! Next comp will be at the Lane on March 9th.

Duck Diving Tips:
See the link below for detailed duck diving tips by Holly Beck. This is especially relevant to girl team surfers, demonstrating technique and foot placement tricks. It also has suggestions on how to modify your dives for bigger boards and opening your eyes underwater to find seams of to slip through when waves are bigger and turbulent:
High School Surf Team Practice/Comp Schedule and CalHi Video:
The high school squad will only have practice "free surfs" on Friday and Sunday due to the competition at The Hook on Saturday. Be sure to be at the Hook by 7:30 a.m. to grab parking and warm up surf (team comp starts at 8:30 a.m. against Santa Cruz High). The good news is that there should be swell, but it will be accompanied by stiff south (onshore) winds -- you should look at this as a great opportunity to advance, since we train in all conditions.
CalHiSports filmed us at the Pleasure Point contest last month and we will be the first high school surf team featured on their show, which will air on Sunday at 6 p.m. on KOFY TV channel 20 (cable 13) and repeat at 10 p.m. If you miss it then, Comcast SportsNet will run it between 3-5 p.m. between Sharks and/or Warriors games. We will appear in the middle of the hour-long show. Congratulations all!
See ya at the Hook,
Mike, Kerri, Chris
Breath-holding Session for High School Chargers:
Mark Alfaro has organized a breath-holding, underwater swim session at the HMB High pool Thursday night (Feb -13) from 6-7 p.m. This is only for those interested in joining in from the high school team and is great preparation for larger surf from a very experienced waterman. Mark suggests you bring an old or light wetsuit if needed.
We will be at Kelly Tuesday 2.11.14 @ 6:45am. We will send a text to the group if there is to be any change.

HMB High Surf Team Video:
Coach Loeswick put together a quick video of the high school squad at Montara today for you guys to review for style points and self-critique. Great job by all in challenging conditions, especially with the extra mandate of doubling your score on rights. See link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs0eFc4pfMc
As a reminder, Chris has arranged a x-training seminar for all on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. at Snap Fitness. As an added inducement to get some great fitness advice for surfing I will be offering extra roster points to high schoolers who attend (it is open to the junior high team too). Permission waivers will be available at the front desk on Tuesday.
See ya there,
We will not be running Club Practice at Dunes tomorrow due to continuing raw conditions at Dunes.
