HIGH SCHOOL SURF TEAM Practice Schedule:

1) Friday 4 pm - Dunes
2) Sunday 9 am - Kelly

Let's take a chance that the high tide tomorrow afternoon will compensate for the NW winds at Dunes and take advantage of the clean conditions and smaller swell on Sunday at Kelly. Then it's just a week to go before the comp in HMB, fingers crossed.

1) Friday - Free Surf
2) Sunday - 9 a.m. Kelly

Stiff Northwest winds, short-period swell and a deep negative tide Friday afternoon have wrecked any hopes of a finding shelter for a practice. Free surf if you can find it. Let's drop back and punt to Sunday morning at Kelly, where offshores, rising tide and moderate swell should give us a better shot.

We are thinking there is a chance for surf in the am... so if you are interested we will have the gate unlocked for a free surf before school - it was pretty fun this morning.

HIGH SCHOOL SURF TEAM Practice Schedule:

1) Friday - Happy Halloween & Giants Parade (free surf)
2) Sunday - Jetty 9 a.m.

Rain and other events will conspire against a team practice on Friday, though Montara or Linda Mar may work for a "free surf" with south winds and moderate swell. Sunday we'll be coming off a large swell the day prior, which may still be a little too chunky for our beach breaks. If not the Jetty, we will confirm an alternate venue.

HIGH SCHOOL TEAM RESULTS for Pleasure Point Comp Sunday:

Thanks to a solid 270 degree west wind swell, sunny skies and offshore breezes on Sunday, the first competition of the 2014-15 season was a doozy at the Point amid 5-7 foot surf and heavy sets.

Team Round: HMB 65 - Aptos 62

Making it out of the team rounds were Hunter Murison, Luke Eveslage and Malcolm Feix, Tanner Islander, Kaira Wallace, and Katrina Sponsler. Among them, Luke (shortboard), Tanner (longboard) and Kaira (longboard) ranked first in their respective team heats. Along with all the other fine team efforts this gave HMB the final edge over Aptos by a razor thin margin. Every single point earned on Sunday made a difference in the team result.

Individual Round:

In the Men's shortboard, quarters Malcolm won his heat with a solid display of power surfing, before bowing out in the semis, while Hunter went on to place 5th in the finals, building on a sharp performance all day. In women's shortboard, Kaira advanced to the finals where she placed 3rd with critical turns and finishing on inside runners.

In Men's longboard, Coel Miller snuck in via an alternate slot in the semis before finishing a very strong 3rd place in the finals with some long cheater 5s and great wave selection. Tanner bowed out in the semis. In women's longboard, Kaira advanced to the finals and took down her first victory of the season with crisp cross-stepping and critical nose-riding.

Women's longboard: Kaira Wallace 1st
Men's longboard: Coel Miller 3rd
Women's shortboard: Kaira Wallace 3rd
Men's shortboard: Hunter Murison 5th

Great way to start the season!!

Your Coaches,

Mike, Kerri, Chris

P.S. Next high school comp will be on Saturday, November 22, in HMB, conditions permitting.

Weekend Comps Moved to Santa Cruz

Weekend Comps Moved to Santa Cruz:

Due to the aforementioned raw conditions in HMB this weekend, both the middle school and high school competitions have been moved to Santa Cruz by the SCSSL after reviewing all the data. This will give us a better shot at cleaner and more contestable conditions. We will try again in HMB on November 22-23.

1) Middle School will be at the Hook on Saturday Oct-25 at 9 a.m. against Aptos
2) High School will be at Pleasure Point on Sunday Oct-26 at 9 a.m. vs Aptos

Please be at the contest site an hour before the team heats start, warmed up and ready to go. Be prepared for south wind and rain on Saturday, and fat high tide lulls at midday on both days. If you have any questions, please contact your coaches directly.

HMB Competition and Practice Schedule Update

10/24/2014 4:00 pm
America/Los Angeles

HMB Competition and Practice Schedule Update:

Coaches have been working diligently with our resident forecaster Mark Sponsler of Stormsurf and the SCSSL directors to assess if we will have to postpone this weekend's competitions for the middle and high school surf teams, or if we can relocate them to Santa Cruz given the incoming heavy swell and winds. It looks likely that the HMB comps may be rolled to the spring if cancelled, but that decision has not been formalized and may not be known until Thursday.

In the meantime, please do not speculate about that possibility on the team email and we will send out an update as soon as we know the league's decision. Titan's of Maverick's will be holding their opening paddle-out on Friday, gathering at the beach from 2 p.m. We are welcome to participate, though this is not an excused absence from school and most coaches will not be available to take part and supervise.

In light of the weather, swell size and other events, the HIGH SCHOOL TEAM will have a "free surf" on Friday and Sunday, with no formal practices if the contests are cancelled. May be a good weekend to put in some time at Pleasure Point and the Hook for our next contests, which were moved from Nov 15-16 to Nov 22-23 due to a conflict with the Volcom series.

Thanks for your patience,

Coach Mike

HIGH SCHOOL TEAM Practice Schedule:

We will hold an optional practice schedule over Pumpkin Fest Weekend.

1) Friday 4 pm - Montara
2) Sunday 9 am - Montara

With some luck, south winds and swell decay we may find surfable conditions at Montara by Friday afternoon. I will send an update to confirm. Same m.o. on Sunday morning. If I am able to hold heats, this will be for practice only and not include roster points for the upcoming contest, given the challenge of navigating the coast this weekend.

HIGH SCHOOL SURF TEAM practice schedule:

1) Friday - 4 p.m. - calling an audible
2) Sunday - 8 a.m. sharp Jetty

Friday the wind shall be up, the tide will be plunging and new swell perhaps beginning to show. In the unlikely event I find a nook working somewhere, I will send out an email; if not, consider it a "free surf." By Sunday a Maverick's scale swell will be in full swing, so let's get in and out of the Jetty early before it's crowded. I may film in lieu of heats to give you feedback.
