Duck Diving Tips:

See the link below for detailed duck diving tips by Holly Beck. This is especially relevant to girl team surfers, demonstrating technique and foot placement tricks. It also has suggestions on how to modify your dives for bigger boards and opening your eyes underwater to find seams of to slip through when waves are bigger and turbulent:

High School Surf Team Practice/Comp Schedule and CalHi Video:

Hi Folks:

The high school squad will only have practice "free surfs" on Friday and Sunday due to the competition at The Hook on Saturday. Be sure to be at the Hook by 7:30 a.m. to grab parking and warm up surf (team comp starts at 8:30 a.m. against Santa Cruz High). The good news is that there should be swell, but it will be accompanied by stiff south (onshore) winds -- you should look at this as a great opportunity to advance, since we train in all conditions.

CalHiSports filmed us at the Pleasure Point contest last month and we will be the first high school surf team featured on their show, which will air on Sunday at 6 p.m. on KOFY TV channel 20 (cable 13) and repeat at 10 p.m. If you miss it then, Comcast SportsNet will run it between 3-5 p.m. between Sharks and/or Warriors games. We will appear in the middle of the hour-long show. Congratulations all!

See ya at the Hook,

Mike, Kerri, Chris

Breath-holding Session for High School Chargers:

Mark Alfaro has organized a breath-holding, underwater swim session at the HMB High pool Thursday night (Feb -13) from 6-7 p.m. This is only for those interested in joining in from the high school team and is great preparation for larger surf from a very experienced waterman. Mark suggests you bring an old or light wetsuit if needed.

Have fun,
Coach Mike

HMB High Surf Team Video

HMB High Surf Team Video:

Coach Loeswick put together a quick video of the high school squad at Montara today for you guys to review for style points and self-critique. Great job by all in challenging conditions, especially with the extra mandate of doubling your score on rights. See link:

As a reminder, Chris has arranged a x-training seminar for all on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. at Snap Fitness. As an added inducement to get some great fitness advice for surfing I will be offering extra roster points to high schoolers who attend (it is open to the junior high team too). Permission waivers will be available at the front desk on Tuesday.

See ya there,
Coach Mike

HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule

America/Los Angeles

HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule:

1) Friday 4 pm - Montara (free surf)
2) Sunday 9 am - Montara (heats)
3) Tuesday 3:30 pm - Snap Fitness

Weather and surf forecasts for Friday and Sunday practices are looking pretty marginal at best, with heavy south winds and rain on tap -- a welcome winter pattern, but not so great for surfing. We could get lucky for a "free surf" on Friday and heats on Sunday morning. Remember, Tuesday Coach Loeswick will be running a x-training session at Snap Fitness for both Jr. and Sr. high team surfers at 3:30 pm.

See ya there,

Coaches Mike, Kerri and Chris

"I've seen all the surfers on the team improve so much over the season. It seems like everyone is committed to surfing their best, improving their surfing and staying healthy. I'm putting on a FREE training seminar for the HMB surf teams to work on cross-training for surfing. I have free passes to SNAP Fitness that you'll have to get signed by parents if you want to train. I'll hand them out this Sunday at Practice. Middle school team is welcome to join too!"

Chris Loeswick

HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule

02/02/2014 9:00 am
America/Los Angeles

HMB High Surf Team Practice Schedule:

1) Friday - "Free Surf"
2) Sunday - Montara 9 a.m. Heats!

Forecast for Friday (Jan-31) looks very poor with hard WNW onshore winds and short-period swell, making even the Jetty a marginal bet at best. Buddy up and surf where you can find it. Sunday (Feb-2) looks much more promising with a rising tide, ESE offshores and moderate swell in the morning. We'll try for Montara, given the southerly component forecast in the morning offshores. We will run heats, which will dictate the next roster.

Note, the next contest is at the Hook on Feb-15, which is small and has tight take-off zone more often than not. Goofy-footers should practice going right whenever possible over the next couple of weeks. We will also run some offense-defense drills to get you ready for the inevitable paddle battles as well, which we are sure to have against Santa Cruz High. Let's get our grovel on!

See ya there,

Your Coaches,
Mike, Kerri and Chris

Mavericks: Everest of the Seas Exhibit-Reception

This photo and art exhibit organized at the Coastal Arts League on 300 Main St. will be hosting a champagne and wine tasting reception on Saturday, February 1, from 5-8 pm.

HMB Surf Club/Team families are all invited to join in and take part in the fun and there will be a raffle of wetsuits, GoPros, skate boards... and more. Proceeds will go to supporting the HMB surf teams and epic photos and art will be for sale. Our very own in-house water photo ace David Grant will also be debuting a collection of his in-the-barrel shots of our local surfers.

Maverick's chargers young and vintage are known to stop in, so bring your sharpies and phones...

Special thanks go to Ed Grant for organizing this event and the raffle on our behalf.

See ya there,

Coach Mike
