HMB Surf Team/Competition Practice @ Jetty Weds (Jan-23) 3:30 pm

We will get another shot of long-period swell on Weds, along with a dose of south winds and low tide in the afternoon. That will likely shut down everything but the Jetty, so let's hope the wind retains a little east in it.

Don't stress if you can't make it, since we'll have to get lucky to pull it off and there's 100% chance of rain in the afternoon.

Oliver and Marty will be at Kelly Ave. to check conditions. Please.. only experienced surfers shouild go out. We are still expecting solid 6 foot plus sets with a lot of current. Depending on conditions we may cancel or move to a different location.

Contest organizers have decided to run the Mavericks Invitational contest this coming Sunday 1/20/13. The Festival will open at 8am on Sunday...

Contest organizers are asking Surf Club Parents who wish to Volunteer an hour or so of their time, in exchange for entrance to the Festival to report to the Volunteers tent on the festival grounds (the Back Lot of the Oceano Hotel & Spa) or you can send an email to the volunteers coordinator at mavericksvolunteers@gmail.com (Michele D).

Volunteers are needed to help with:

• parking
• drink service at the festival
• perimeter monitors to keep crowds off the bluffs and help monitor festival grounds.

Please come out and support this festival some of the proceeds from the festival will go back into supporting the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside.

Winds are forecast to stay offshore and the swell is supposed to pick up modestly as the tide drops back in the afternoon. Let's try to get in a comp practice and split up on a couple different peaks if we can find them tomorrow.

HMB fell to New Brighton 71 to 55

Conditions were sublimely groomed in the morning, with light offshores and waist to shoulder high peeling mostly left-breaking waves at high tide and rights as the tide drained towards low. Towards the end of the day onshore winds picked up.

***Most of the Midde School Surfers received their SC SSL T-Shirts. Rocky will have them available for the rest of the team at the next couple of practices.

Congratulations HMB High Surf Team on Dual meet win over Harbor!

HMB prevailed by 83 to 26 over Harbor High

HMB's deeper bench of surfers really stepped it up at Manresa, despite missing a couple veteran team members against Harbor's leaner, rebuilding program. Once again we had at least 1 individual finalist in every category and 2 finalists in 3 events. HMB is now 3 for 3 wins so far this season with 2 events left to go at Pleasure Point and The Lane.

Conditions were sublimely groomed in the morning, with light offshores and shoulder-to-head-high peeling mostly left-breaking waves at high tide, favoring our heavily goofy-foot biased team. Tide plunged over the course of day and the left turned into a mosh-pit of sectioning close-outs, forcing many of our finalists to switch to their backhand on the right-breaking sandbar. HMB made the adjustment with style to spare.

Special mention goes out for several "firsts" and highlights. Freshman Thomas Lundgard made his first final in shortboard with some very consistent and smart rail-to-rail heat surfing. Junior Konrad Wallace notched his first victory in longboard finals with combination of stylish cross-stepping, fades and cutbacks. Sophomore Luke Eveslage made a strong statement with his first longboard final. Freshman Kaira Wallace was the only double-finalist in women's shortboard and longboard in a test of will and stamina. Freshmen Hunter Murison and Malcolm Feix both made body board finals, keeping our streak alive.

Folks-

Eoin Bloomer & Tim West have asked for help with a beach cleanup effort of Ross's Cove tomorrow 1/13/13 at noon. They are looking to get as many people as possible to help haul up the remainder of the debris from the boat wreck that is littering the beach. The Bloomer family has donated the use of a debris trailer and the fees for hauling and dumping the waste.

They would like our help in rallying friends of the beach and the HMBSC to come out and help cleanup the mess. Obviously the Middle School surfers that are competing at Manresa, in Santa Cruz, will not be able to make it ... but if you won't be going and have the time- please meet at the parking lot below Ross's Cove at noon tomorrow.

Tim, Eoin and a group they're bringing will be coordinating the Clean up!

HMB High School Surf Team Competition Details @ Manresa:

Saturday (Jan -12) meet at 9:00 am at Manresa. Leave more time as it will take approximately 1-1/2 hours drive from HMB. Take Hwy 1 south of Santa Cruz and exit San Andreas Road toward La Selva Beach. When you're nearly at the beach take a right into the Manresa Beach Park where the road bends sharply to the left. If you're heading east again, you've gone too far.

Team competition starts at 10 am against Harbor and alternates will be drawn at 9:30 am for the individual section at midday.

Please note that other than bathrooms and parking there really isn't much else like shops down at the beach. So bring plenty of food, water, lunch, etc. It will also be very cold with a high temp of 51 degrees, though only 10% chance of rain and wind should be favorable as swell backs down with a big high tide in the morning. Plan accordingly and bring extra rubber and layers (hoods, gloves, poly rash guard).

We will be having Team Meeting at lunch time in the Boys and Girls Club at Cunha - to discuss the roster for the upcoming contest on 1/13/13 at Manresa State Beach, in Santa Cruz. We will be serving Pizza for Lunch.

If your surfer will not be able to attend the contest on 1/13/13 at Manresa State Beach, in Santa Cruz, please notify their coach!
